Developing New Characters
I have some new characters (in Dani and Avi's universe) whom I need to develop, and so I need to do what I always do -- "interview" them. A number of years ago, a friend pointed me to a compendium of questions that one can ask one's characters, and that's how I tend to do new character development. It sounds odd, sure, but it works for me. :-)

But that made me wonder how other people do character development. Do you just write and see where the character takes you? Free writing with a focus on the character (if that can be called true free writing)? Something else entirely?

If I'm looking into adding new characters to a world I've already created, I tend to already have their background in my head. I know before I start the story who they are. What happens is that I allow the other characters to describe and or react to them. I find out how my new characters interact and react at the same time as the other guys. Often I'll dream about them and wake up the next day having learned more about them in my dreams!

I can do that for side characters, but for main characters I usually have to interview them at least just a little.

And my characters take over my dreams, too. I'll wake up in the morning with whole chunks of story I didn't have before I went to sleep.

In a way, I guess I also do that. Just not formally or with a regular set of questions. What I usually want to know before hand is: their family; their relgious background; their lovelife; their education; their age and what they think they look like.
From there, questions are usually within the universe of the story. And maybe it's not so much that I ask questions. I really try to imbed myself in my characters male or female. I come from an acting background and I tend to see my stories in scenes. My husband told me that when I wrote my first m/m story, I even changed my walk! LOL
